LA Sports Museum (I highly recommend!)
If you are ever in the downtown Los Angeles area with a couple extra hours you absolutely need to visit the LA Sports Museum at the corner of Washington and Main. It is the largest collection of top calibre older sports collectibles anywhere! If you are a collector of old sports stuff then this is your field of dreams. Below are just pictures of the main glove evolution display, but the museum is worthy of 100s of photos. The picture on the right is Jim "Ebbets55" Daniel, Ricky "Bulldog" Anderson, and I still in utter amazement at we just saw. Great job Gary ... drop me an email sometime!  |

Oldies Playing with Oldies, Annual 4th of July "Oldtimers Game"
Terry O'Connell's Southern California oldtimers game. There is a designated beater oldtimer 20s-50s glove at each position, and you have to rotate positions each inning. Before the game you draw a red or black card numbered 1-9 which determines your team (red or black), starting fielding position (1 = pitcher, 2 catcher, etc), and batting order number.  |
The good guys finally won. I was 0-2 heading into 2008 |
Based on the placement of the banner the score may not have been that close, but I'll never tell. |

Looking back at the individual photos -- which were taken randomly and scattered throughout the day -- makes me laugh because the serious ballplayer looks remind me of scruffy miners off a Hollywood set. The actually weren't posed with a specific look in mind or direction, but the old uniforms just seem to put you in that frame of mind. Note, please don't emulate the crude glove repairs of the pictured gloves. I think I'll soon be adding a glove repair section that I'll dedicate to Terry.

I don't know if our baseball playing is getting any better year-after-year, but I'm pretty sure our pictures are getting better. A couple of notes, I seem to not be paying attention on the top center photo which I believe is not recommended in the infield, I think I'm throwing a knuckleball (or attempting to at least) in the left center shot, and the Carlton Fisk shot in the center is classic. Fun, fun day.

Fourth of July, 2007
Terry seemed to get a kick out of the bottom center shot which to him looked like someone just teed off on one of my pitches. I seem to recall that it was a routine, lazy, can-of-corn pop fly, but that might be revisionist history on my part (it's my website). I took the bottom right picture while in left field and immediately had to drop my camera (literally on the grass ... priorities) as the batter rifled a shot my way. I actually made the catch, but I think my heart skipped a beat or two.

Fourth of July, 2005
Terry O'Connell had been running his annual Oltimers game for over a decade but took several years off. He restarted the tradition he says partially inspired by this website (cool!). 2005 was my first year and I was hooked. Send me some pictures of similar events from your area and I'll post pictures.

Glove Displays
After years of slowly altering my displays a little at a time, I took one weekend in March and changed them all. Here's one of the new displays. I'll update a new display each time I change my Featured page. This one is a great shaped cabinet on my upstairs hall. Check out the twin crescent fielders.Display #4
I don't have the greatest bat collection in the world but have some decent decal and mushroom bats.

The National Sports Convention, 2006
I had a blast as a dealer at the National in Anaheim, 2006 ... my first show as a dealer.  |
It was a ton of work getting the items ready for the National, including several days of conditioning and/or lacing. |
I shared the booth with my friend Tom (see Past Times below) which I think provided for a good variety of stuff. |

Considering we sort of did it on the cheap (not renting any additional cabinets, etc), we were told by many that it was one of the two best looking booths. |
I brought 150 gloves of all ages, types, and condition, including three Ruths, a Foxx, Alexander, Winchester, etc. |

I even made available three of my favorites at "back away from my favorite" prices (I'm still glad they didn't sell). |

Birthday, Christmas, or Just-because Hinting Techniques
OK, so maybe it doesn't go over so well giving yourself a nice gift. And buying your wife a glove raises suspicion, to say the least. Here are some tips to subtly drop the hint to a loved one what you'd really like for Christmas, your birthday, or whatever. Believe you me, they are always looking for hints.
1) Leave an email or listing somewhere where it can be found.
If this doesn't
work try posting it on the refridgerator door.
2) Contact me from a loved one's email ID and have me reply to it.
3) Have me send a list via regular mail in both of your names (let the loved
one open it).

Antique Flea Markets
In Southern California we have antique swap meets on a regular basis. The supply of gloves is limited and the competition is fierce, but some quality items are still found by some of my friendly competition. It's quite a sight to watch several glove collectors shoot off in ten different directions when the doors open (like a shotgun blast). Needless to say, I get real excited for the other collector when they find an item seconds before I would have (OK, so maybe there is a little jealousy but we do get along surpisingly well).Drop me a note when you are coming to the area and will shoot off in different directions together (and you can beat me to some great stuff like the others). Here are some photos from one of my latest glove quests to prove that I do on occasion drag myself out of bed at the crack of dawn in search of the elusive leather.
